Why was the old merchant very pleased with his second son?
Answer:
The old merchant was very much pleased with his second son. He had given his sons a test. They had to buy something for one rupee which can fill the house. The first son bought hay but the second son bought candles for one rupee and filled the entire house with light by lighting it. Therefore, the old merchant was pleased with his second son.

Which type of citizens does a country need? (Imp.)
Answer:
A country needs good citizens. Such citizens who should use their powers and abilities to try to spread light into all parts their country and spend themselves in the service of their country.

Question 3.
What did Guru Nanak pray for people of the second village?
Answer:
Guru Nanak prayed for the people of second village that they might not remain in the village but might be scattered throughout the country.

Question 1.
How did the old merchant come to know that the younger son was cleverer than the elder? (M.P. 2013, 16)
Answer:
The old merchant gave his sons one rupee each. He told them to buy something of it that can fill the entire house. The first son bought hay for one rupee and scattered it on the floor. The second son bought candles for one rupee and stood them in each room of his house. In the evening he lit the candles and the entire house was filled with light. In this way the old merchant found that his second son was cleverer than his elder son.

Question 2.
‘A chain is as strong as its weakest link’. Explain. (Imp.)
Answer:
A chain is made up of several links. The stronger the links are the stronger the chain is. When a chain experiences strain every link of the chain has to bear that strain separately though they are connected to each other. If the links are not of equal strength then the weakest link breaks down and consequently the chain too breaks. Thus the strength of the chain is limited up to the strength of the weakest link. Therefore a chain is always as strong as its weakest link.
