Answer:
He felt ashamed because he sneezed on an old man’s head, sitting in front of him.

Question 1.
How did Tcherviakoff apologize in the office? How did the General react?
शर्विआकॉफ ने कार्यालय में किस तरह क्षमायाचना की? जनरल ने कैसे प्रतिक्रिया की?
Answer:
In the office, when the General raised his eye to Tcherviakoff, he reminded him that how he accidentally sneezed on him the previous day in the opera house. Then he begged of him to excuse him. The General refused to talk on that matter. Tcherviakoff was terrified. He waited there to talk to the General.
At the end of the day when General was leaving he again tried to explain to him that it was not done on purpose and he was repenting it. The General made a fearful face, and disappeared behind the door saying that he must be joking.
कार्यालय में जब जनरल ने शर्विआकॉफ की ओर देखा तो उसने जनरल को याद दिलाया कि कैसे कल वह नाट्यगृह में दुर्घटनावश उन पर छींक पड़ा था। फिर उनसे क्षमायाचना की। जनरल ने इस बारे में बात करने से मना कर दिया। शर्विआकॉफ भयभीत हो गया।
वह जनरल से बात करने के लिये वहाँ रुका रहा। दिन के अंत में जब जनरल जा रहा था उसने फिर से उसे समझाने की कोशिश की कि ऐसा जानबूझकर (किसी उद्देश्य से) नहीं किया गया था और वह उसके लिये पछता रहा था। जनरल ने क्रोधपूर्ण मुद्रा बनाई और द्वार के पीछे यह कहते हुए लुप्त हो गया कि वह अवश्य ही मजाक कर रहा होगा।

Answer:
Next day Tcherviakoff went again to the General’s office to tell that he was not joking about the incident that happened in the opera house. The General bursted with anger and shouted at him to get out. Tcherviakoff was horrified. He could not tolerate this tension and died due to it.
अगले दिन शर्विआकॉफ फिर से जनरल के कार्यालय यह बताने गया कि वह नाट्य गृह में जो घटना हई उस बारे में मजाक नहीं कर रहा था।
जनरल उस पर क्रोध से फट पड़ा और उसे चिल्लाकर बाहर जाने को कहा। शर्विआकॉफ आतंकित हो गया। वह इस तनाव को बर्दाश्त नहीं कर पाया और मर गया।

Answer:
Tcherviakoff was a minor official. He had a good taste as he enjoyed opera. He was little over conscious about his behaviour in society. He used to get terrified easily. He had a poor practical understanding as he could not realise that the General wanted to forget the sneezing incident while he kept pressing on it. He used to follow his wife’s advice. We can also say that he used to care about others feeling too much.
शर्विआकॉफ एक छोटा अधिकारी था। उसकी पसंद अच्छी थी और वह संगीत नाटक का आनंद लेता था। वह समाज में व्यवहार के लिये जरूरत से ज्यादा सतर्क था। वह आसानी से भयभीत हो जाता था। उसकी व्यावहारिक समझ काफी कमजोर थी इसलिये वह समझ नहीं पाया कि जनरल उसकी छींकने वाली घटना को भूल जाना चाहता था। परन्तु वह उसी पर जोर देता रहा। वह अपनी पत्नी की सलाह मानता था। हम ये भी कह सकते हैं कि वह दूसरों की भावनाओं की बहुत ज्यादा कद्र करता था।
